hours (4 hours)
Instructor: Ben “Boz” Boswell, Sergeant Retired, SBSD, KC6KSV
Continuing with the long tradition of education in the field of hazardous materials, Boz will again offer a 16 hour, state certified course. WHO should take this course? According to federal and state regulations, anyone who can or potentially could come in contact with or discover an actual or potential hazardous material spill, will be required to have received training. This course meets both state and federal OSHA requirements. For those who work for a company requiring this training, this is a great way to become certified. Besides, maybe your employment will reimburse you for the class and trip. Why should others take this course? What if you discover a hazardous materials incident? What whould you do? Should you try to stop the leak? How far should I be from it? How will it hurt me and others? Can I make a difference, or will I be a hindrance? How can I increase the chances of going home safely? This is the course curriculum with emphasis on recognition and taking the safe approach to protect yourself and others.
The basic FRO course begins Friday at 1800 hours, continues all day on Saturday and will conclude at 1200 hours on Sunday. FRO Course requirements: students must complete the full 16 hour curriculum in order to meet the certification requirements. The refresher will take place on Friday from 1800 to 2200 hours.
There will be a minimal $15 fee for the 16 hours course and a $10 fee for the refresher course. These costs cover state administrative fees and postage for certificate mailings. New students taking the 16 hours course will receive an ERG (Emergency Response Guides) at no additional costs. Fees are paid, preferably in small unmarked bills (oh yes, checks will be accepted). All payments will be made at the time you check into class. Refresher students should bring their 2004 ERG’s. ERG’s are limited and will be available for purchase, as long as supplies last.

Amateur Radio Technician License Study/Exam Session
1/2-day study/exam session to pass the FCC Amateur Radio Technician Exam. Examinees must bring government-issued signed picture ID and another form of ID to assure examiners of their identity (passport and drivers license are ideal forms of ID.). Exam fee is $4.
Some study of the questions and just right answers before the session will reduce some of the pressure; students can download these questions at http://goodkin.net/public/HamRadio/LAACARC
In class, 4 hours of reading the questions and just right answers will make the right answers the only ones the examinees will recognize when they take the exam. Every 45 minutes, the instructor will take 15 minutes away from reading to demonstrate some way of remembering the answers, or will explain an electronic or communications subject covered on the exam.
After 4 hours, the Volunteer Examiner team will come in and administer the FCC Exam. They will grade the exams immediately and let the examinees know the results. After passing, FCC license will be issued in just a few days. Students must provide e-mail addresses and telephone contact information in case additional information is required after the session.
Students can take on-line practice exams in advance of the class at these websites:
http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl http://www.eham.net/exams/ and http://aa9pw.com/radio/ When they achieve consistent passing grades of 80%, they are sure to be ready

The pass rate has averaged 90%; students who spend a little time outside of class in preparation are sure to pass.
Norm’s boasts of having 35 licensed hams in his family – he calls it his Hamily and offers a challenge to anyone to beat that number!
Working with students at AC Stelle Middle School, Norm and his friend & teacher, Karl Beutel, managed to motivate 47 students to take and pass the Tech exam, nearly triple what they did last year. The students used the same study materials, a combination of the Questions and Only Right Answers and on-line practice tests.
Norm is active in the LA County Disaster Communications Service as well as the PAPA System repeater group – he invites new hams to learn about both organizations at http://lacdcs.com and http://papasys.net

The aviation track is put on by CAP (Civil Air Patrol) and is an actual training class required by its members. Through Sarcity other agency personnel are able to take advantage of the many sorties flown over the Barstow area in search of targets. This year looks like 16 aircraft will be available to fly the missions in which you have the opportunity to be an observer. Operations take place out of Daggett Airport located 10 miles to the East of Barstow off the I40.
